PUT ON-LINE:
A Virtual Support Group
Since PUT has only a small number of leaders to run support groups, we have decided to run our program using the Internet. Rather than simply meet on-line in a general chat room, we want to try something new - weekly structured on-line meetings. Each meeting will consist of PowerPoint slide presentations, discussions, and breakout rooms. Since an on-line meeting can reasonably last no more than about 2 hours, each meeting will be structured to feature a single program topic.

PUT will also try something else, made possible by the fact that the parents will now be returning every week. During the meeting, each parent will be asked to identify a specific way that they will actively use the weekly featured topic this will be their Plan Of Action. Then at the next meeting, they will share with the other parents - and group leaders - what happened when they attempted this with their troublesome kid.

  • During the week, parents use the weekly topic according to the Plan Of Action they made at the last meeting.
  • Parents also log in frequently to send/check messages to/from other parents and leaders, to read new forum postings, and to chat with others about their issues with their kids.
  • Prior to the meeting, parents log in and enter a description of what happened when they used the weekly topic. This will be shared with the others during the meeting.
  • Members log in at the scheduled meeting time and enter their virtual meeting room. The meeting is managed by a PUT Leader and consists of 4 parts that last a maximum of 2 hours:
    1. In Part 1 of the meeting, which is no more than 30 minutes, the parents meet in their pre-assigned breakout groups, each of which is led by a parent who has been designated as the breakout group leader. The leader asks for each parent to share their experiences using last week's topic. Both successes and failures.
    2. In Part 2 of the meeting, which is no longer than 35 minutes, the parents all meet with the Leader, who presents this week's topic. PUT has decided to handle questions during the presentation in a controlled way, the same as in a traditional meeting room program. At the end of Part 2, the Leader may describe a short "role play" that the parents will be asked to perform to illustrate the weekly topic. The role play description consists of a set of roles and a situation.
    3. In Part 3 of the meeting, which lasts 15 minutes, parents return to their pre-assigned breakout groups, where the breakout group leader may assign the roles defined by the role play. The selected parents act out the scenario as though it is really happening, then discuss it briefly if they decide to do so.
    4. In Part 4 of the meeting, which is no longer than 40 minutes, parents remain in their breakout groups. The breakout group leader manages the time and ensures that each parent has a chance to formulate and discuss their Plan Of Action (POA) for the next week. The parent enters the POA on screen so all the other parents in the breakout group can see it and make suggestions on what they can to do achieve thier POA.
  • At the end of Part 4, the meeting ends and all members are placed back together in a large chat room, where they can continue informal discussions or just say good-bye.
